Pittsburgh, Pa (AP) — A western Pennsylvania woman, convicted in the shooting death of an FBI agent during a drug raid at her home a dozen years ago, is seeking release from prison, citing the coronavirus. The Tribune-Review reports that Christina Korbe is currently scheduled for release in May 2022. She was sentenced to 15 years on voluntary manslaughter and a firearms pleas in the November 2008 death of Special Agent Samuel Hicks.
GRINDAVIK, Iceland (AP) — A volcano in southwestern Iceland erupted Wednesday for the fifth time since December, spewing red streams of lava in the latest display of nature’s power and triggering the evacuation of the popular Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. The eruption began in the early afternoon following a series of earthquakes north of Grindavik, a coastal town of 3,800 people that was largely evacuated in December when the volcano erupted.
DUBOIS, Pa (WJAC) — Police in Clearfield County say a DuBois man is facing charges in connection to the overdose death of a 27-year-old woman, according to a criminal complaint. Patrick O'Brien, 37, faces charges of drug delivery resulting in death, involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence in relation to the incident that occurred in March, according to court documents. The complaint states that on March 28th, around 10 p.m., Sandy Township police were dispatched to a home along Carson Avenue after O'Brien called and reported that the woman was not breathing.
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — A grand opening celebration was held Tuesday for the opening of another Johnstown business. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for Bridge and Rising Studio and Lofts, located on Clinton Street. Owner Serena Bridges says the building was completely empty when she bought it several months ago. Now, three businesses occupy the space. On the first floor is game and hobby shop "Wolves and Wyverns" Located on the second floor is a studio space that can be rented for classes, workshops, or other events.
Johnstown, PA (WJAC) — UPDATE | Cambria County District Attorney Greg Neugebauer gave more details regarding Saturday's fatal shooting outside the "Liquid Currency" bar in Cambria City in a press conference Thursday morning. Neugebauer said a verbal dispute began inside the bar between Caleb Beppler, 21, and the bar owner that ended up outside on the street. He went on to say that Beppler's cousin, Desmond Louder, then entered the altercation that briefly became physical him and the bar owner.
UNIVERSITY PARK - Penn State University women's gymnastics head coach Jeff Thompson was relieved of his duties Thursday, according to a news release from the university's athletics department. Thompson was in his seventh year in charge of the program. The university said assistants Kera Molinaro and Josh Nilson will serve as interim co-head coaches for the rest of the season. The university would not specify for the reason of Thompson's firing, but Thompson's wife and former associate head coach, Rachelle Thompson, resigned in May after PennLive.
HUNTINGDON, Pa. (WJAC) — Officials say two inmates at SCI Huntingdon who tested positive for COVID-19 have died. The state Department of Corrections made the announcement Monday night. SCI Huntingdon has over 150 inmates, as well as 45 employees who have tested positive for the virus. DOC officials have not released the names or ages of the inmates who died. According to the state Department of Health, Huntingdon County as a whole reports 214 positive cases of the coronavirus.
UPDATEClearfield Co., PA (WJAC) — An inmate who escaped the Clearfield County Jail on Tuesday has been captured. On Wednesday, questions remained about how exactly he got away and what's being done to prevent something like this from happening again. Tuesday at 1 p.m. is when authorities say 36-year-old Craig Hauke-Miller completed his escape from the county jail. According to the affidavit, police say surveillance video reportedly showed Hauke-Miller climbing a door and then the roof of the jail in order to pull of the escape.
WASHINGTON (TND) — The U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center on Thursday issued a severe geomagnetic storm watch for a solar event which could impact a majority of Americans Friday into Saturday. Officials explained in a release they expect an eruption of solar material, known as a coronal mass ejection (CME), to result in a geomagnetic storm. Along with the release was the rating of G4 for “severe,” which the agency has not issued since 2005.
