TYRONE/BLAIR COUNTY, Pa — Earlier today, the Deputy Secretary of Technology and Entrepreneurship for the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development paid a visit to a startup company in Tyrone, that is prospering through the DCED’s Benjamin Franklin Technology Development Authority.
Deputy Secretary Steve D’Ettorre says that having the Ben Franklin’s provide small-town startups with resources to grow has been hugely effective.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Dozens of children who were sent to juvenile detention centers and similar facilities in Pennsylvania suffered physical and sexual abuse including violent rapes, according to four related lawsuits filed Wednesday.
The lawsuits describe how 66 people, now adults, say they were victimized by guards, nurses, supervisors and others. Some attacks were reported to other staffers and were ignored or met with disbelief, the lawsuits allege.
Their claims point to a broken juvenile justice system in Pennsylvania, said Jerome Block, a New York lawyer whose firm filed the new cases and is helping pursue similar lawsuits in Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey and Michigan.
PORTLAND, Ore. — It could cost between $750,000 and $875,000 to repair Portland State University's publicly-funded Millar Library after it was heavily damaged and vandalized during a protest occupation earlier this month. Millar Library was occupied by pro-Palestine protesters who staged an occupation of the building in late April through early May.

SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — Wednesday afternoon at Ideal Market, Johnstown native Karen purchased something other than just groceries.
"I donated three cases of water for the hurricane folks, because I used to live in Florida, so I know what it's like," she told 6 News.
The donations are being taken by volunteers from 3C's Church in Central City, home of the Machine Gun Preacher.
The items will soon be delivered to Florida to help the victims devastated by the impacts of Hurricane Ian.

Sergeant William Nesbit of Altoona was among those hanged.
Nesbit was wrongly convicted of leading the mutiny of all black regiments against Houston police and civilians.
Now, more than a century later, a ceremony is being held to restore those soldiers’ names.

NEW YORK CITY (TND) — A 90-year-old volunteer at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society was recently asked to "step away" from her role for not aligning with the organization's inclusion standards, The National Desk confirmed Thursday.
Fran Itkoff, whose late husband reportedly suffered from multiple sclerosis, had been volunteering for the MS Society for nearly six decades. The non-profit's request for Itkoff to step away was first revealed in an interview with the popular social media account Libs of TikTok.
