STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – A big weekend in Detroit, with many local school districts traveling to the Motor City to compete. More than 15,000 students from around the world went head-to-head with robots, built from scratch. A team in State College was part of the winning group that brought home the title. The Centre County team was part of the winning alliance to win the FIRST Robotics world championship. The Centre County 4-H Robotics Team won along with Stryke Force from Kalamazoo, Michigan, Team Rush from Clarkston, Michigan, and Lake Effect Robotics from Kingston, Ontario.
WASHINGTON (TND) — House Speaker Mike Johnson survived a bid to remove him from his leadership role on Wednesday but is facing a difficult governing and political dynamic moving forward with a group of Republicans frustrated with his guidance of the House and a tight majority that isn’t guaranteed Democratic votes if there is another effort to oust him. The move to oust Johnson from the speakership was the second attempt to remove a speaker during this Congress, which was a rarity prior to the ouster of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy last fall.
PITTSBURGH (WJAC) — According to NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly signing free-agent wide-receiver Scotty Miller to a one-year deal. The 26-year-old most recently played for the Atlanta Falcons, and will be reunited with Arthur Smith, who has taken over as the Steelers' new offensive coordinator. Miller was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019 and spent four seasons with them. He has played in 67 career games, recording 85 catches, for over 1,000 total yards and 6 touchdowns.
Pittsburgh Steelers and casual football fans alike woke up Wednesday to the devastating news that legendary Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris had passed away, just days before he was to be honored on the 50th anniversary of "The Immaculate Reception." Since the news of his passing, fans from near and far have shared condolences and their memories of Harris, as well as what he meant to the city of Pittsburgh and the entire Steelers' organization.
DUBOIS, Pa (WJAC) — This week, twenty college baseball and softball teams will compete in a four-day tournament within the city of DuBois in hopes of beating teams from all across the country. Officials say the tournament's impact extends beyond the field. Hundreds of baseball and softball players have descended on DuBois to participate in the Small College World series. "It's just it's a really unique environment. It's one of the benefits of being able to come into a small town and host a huge event,” says USCAA Chief Operating Officer BJ Bertges.
ALTOONA, Pa. (WJAC) — After winning a state championship, one local youth hockey team is now looking to become national champions next month. In their first year of being able to compete for a state championship, the Mid-State Mustangs took home gold in Pennsylvania, and now they will go on to compete for a national championship in April. In early March, the Mid-State Mustangs 14U hockey team won the Mid-Am Pennsylvania State Championship in Pittsburgh.
EBENSBURG, Pa. (WJAC) — Authorities responded to a fatal crash along Plank Road in East Carroll Township, according to the Cambria County Coroner's Office. According to state police, one person was killed. Authorities say the crash happened along Plank Road near Main Street Monday morning. According to an initial investigation, state police believe the car hit an embankment while trying to exit Plank Road. The car went airborne and hit a billboard pole, according to state police.
The Cambria County Coroner's Office unveiled new gear Wednesday to help keep their staff safe on calls. Coroner Jeff Lees showcased the five sets of brand-new gear for his office. The gear cost nearly $10,000 and includes coats, pants, boots and gloves. Lees says the gear was bought with grant money, meaning there's no cost to taxpayers. He says his office received the grant for taking time to provide statistical data about deaths to the Department of Health.
ALTOONA, Pa. — Christmas is a season of joy, and Altoona volunteers are giving. Hundreds of children got the chance to enjoy Christmas early at the annual kids' Christmas party hosted by the Jaffa Shriners. "We get in the holiday spirit with this," Altoona parent Carla Foust said. For over 50 years, the Jaffa Shriners have been sharing Christmas with the community. "I’m so excited to meet Santa Claus," one of the kids said.
