2024-06-06
ELK COUNTY, Pa — People who live and work around Benezette are gearing up for an annual tradition that is also a vital part of their economy: elk mating season.
Despite elk living in the area for centuries, the Rocky Mountain elk were not always part of the area’s ecosystem.
The indigenous species, the Eastern elk, were hunted to extinction in 1877.
The Rocky Mountain species was brought in many years ago, and through careful stewardship, their herd now numbers around 1,500.

The Labor Department reported Thursday that unemployment claims for the week ending April 27 was 208,000, the same as the previous week. That's the fewest since mid-February.
The four-week average of claims, which softens some of the weekly volatility, fell by 3,500 to 210,000.

“Barbers and Gents” in downtown Johnstown is making sure every student looks their very best going back to school.
EAGLE PASS, Texas (WOAI) — You've likely heard about the floating barrier in the Rio Grande, but what you might not have heard about is the metal disks in between each buoy.
The disks with serrated edges are at the center of new controversy, and their intent changes depending on who you ask. Some opponents have referred to them as circular saws.
Rep. Joaquin Castro got to see them up close earlier this month after leading a group of Democratic lawmakers on a border visit.
CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — If you attend any services throughout Memorial Day weekend, you will most likely see honor guards present. However, in recent years, there have been some reports around the country of local units struggling with recruitment.
One honor guard unit traveled to a number of churches on Sunday in Centre County to give their salute, and will do so again on Memorial Day.
