UNITED 93 re-release to benefit Friends of Flight 93, producer to speak at virtual series
SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — This week marks 20 years since the heroes aboard United Airlines Flight 93 forced their hijacked plane down into the fields of Somerset County.
There are two ways you can help remember those 40 passengers and crew members this week -- according to Donna Gibson -- the President of the Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial.
"I'm really excited to have this all come together and have people learn about what happened here on September 11th, 2001, in a different way," she told 6 News.
You may have seen the movie UNITED 93, which was originally released in 2006 by director, writer, and producer Paul Greengrass.
Now -- to honor the 20th Anniversary of 9/11 -- AMC Theatres and Universal Pictures will re-release the movie in select AMC theaters across the United States (for one week only).
UNITED 93 tells the story of the passengers & crew members who heroically forced their hijacked plane down near Shanksville, which prevented an attack on the Capitol Building.
All of proceeds from the tickets sales will go to the Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial.
"When the movie came out, many people thought to themselves, 'Why would the movie theater take advantage of these poor families? Haven't they gone through enough?' But actually, the families were very excited to be part of this, because they knew that Paul was going to tell the story of their loved ones. It was a story that needed to be told," Gibson said.
On Wednesday, Paul Greengrass will speak virtually about the making of UNITED 93 during the Friends of Flight 93 "20th Commemoration Virtual Speaker Series."
The family members of the Flight 93 passengers portrayed in the movie will also be involved in the online series.
The public is welcome to listen in on the online event.
"I think it's going to be a really different take on our speaker series," Gibson said.
