A devastating fire resulting in one victim destroyed a house on the 3000 block of Somerset Pike in Conemaugh Township.
According to emergency officials, the call came in around 8:30 p.m. on Friday. The fire caused closings on parts of Somerset Pike as well as Ligonier Pike. We spoke with the fire chief of the Conemaugh Fire Department for more information on this deadly fire.
“What happened was my deputy chief was coming home from work and somebody stopped them on the road and they saw that this house was on fire," said Brian Shoff, Conemaugh Township Fire Chief. "They called it in. By the time the first arriving unit got on scene it was very well involved. Fed up a water supply with tankers and a hydrant. We proceeded with a defensive mode of fire suppression.”
Several crews were on the scene to help with the fire. Along with Conemaugh Township there were crews from Jerome, Stoystown, Jennerstown, Windber, Hooversville, Boswell, and many others also from Cambria County.
"The fire departments laid approximately three thousand feet of large diameter hose on the north side and we set up a tanker shuttle on the south side of route 985," said Fire Chief Shoff. “The house was a total loss.”
While one person has been pronounced dead from inside of the fire, no crews have been injured and the scene was secured by 4am.
“They pulled in and everyone arriving on scene, everybody just cooperated and did the best we could for the situation it was," said Fire Chief Shoff. "The first units arriving on scene the entire building was involved in fire. The fire Marshall was there that night. He arrived on scene at approximately 2am.”
The coroner expects to release more information on Monday.
