World reacts to death of HOF RB Franco Harris

Pittsburgh Steelers and casual football fans alike woke up Wednesday to the devastating news that legendary Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris had passed away, just days before he was to be honored on the 50th anniversary of "The Immaculate Reception."

Since the news of his passing, fans from near and far have shared condolences and their memories of Harris, as well as what he meant to the city of Pittsburgh and the entire Steelers' organization.

It is difficult to find the appropriate words to describe Franco Harris' impact on the Pittsburgh Steelers, his teammates, the City of Pittsburgh and Steelers Nation. From his rookie season, which included the Immaculate Reception, through the next 50 years, Franco brought joy to people on and off the field. He never stopped giving back in so many ways. He touched so many, and he was loved by so many. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Dana, his son Dok, and his extended family at this difficult time.

Another Steelers Hall of Famer and Super Bowl champion coach Bill Cowher also shared his thoughts on Harris' death.

Several state and local lawmakers also expressed their condolences to the Harris family and shared their thoughts on what the Hall of Famer meant to the Steelers, the city of Pittsburgh and the NFL as a whole.

"Franco Harris left an indelible mark on Pittsburgh and Steelers fans around the world. A true son of Pittsburgh, he devoted his life, on and off the field, to the Steel City. My deepest condolences to his wife Dana and his son Dok," said Sen. Bob Casey.

“Gisele, myself, and everyone across the nation are devastated by this news. We are sending our deepest condolences to Franco's family. Franco was a true legend and icon on and off the field. He gave so much to everyone and was a truly selfless man. It was an enormous honor and profound privilege to have gotten to know him over the years. I will miss him dearly," said Pennsylvania Senator-elect John Fetterman.

The Steelers will honor Harris during Saturday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders, as his #32 will be retired.

Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. on the NFL Network.
